5 Simple Ways to Keep your Hair Shiny & Breakage-Free

Everyone deserves to have beautiful, healthy hair without breakage. Unfortunately, our environments, showering habits, and styling tools often work against our hair goals. The good news is that just a few simple changes to your daily routine can help you get that smooth, silky mane you’ve been craving.

1. Turn Down the Heat

Most people know that blow-drying their hair at high temperatures leads to hair damage, but did you know that washing with hot water can also dehydrate your locks? Basically, too much heat of any kind leads to fragile hair and the risk of breakage. In many cases, the best answer to preventing breakage is turning down the heat in your shower.

If you typically wash your hair in water so hot it steams up the bathroom within minutes, try washing in lukewarm water or even cool water. Not only will your hair be happier, but you’ll feel more refreshed afterward, too! If you must use a blow-dryer, try to blow-dry from 50% dry instead of reaching for your dryer right after a shower. Apply a protective product to your hair before styling, such as our Pink Sugar Leave-in conditioner, to protect against breakage and frizz. You can also try using the cool setting on your dryer, which allows you to style your hair with less heat.

 2. Wash Your Hair Less

Contrary to what many people expect, washing your hair every day can actually dry out your hair and scalp. This is because the natural oils from your scalp keep the hair follicles moisturized. Shampoo is designed to wash away excess oil that builds up, but a certain amount of oil in the hair is necessary for healthy hair that doesn’t dry out and break.

Most people will have healthier hair when they only wash it 2-3 times per week. As a general rule of thumb, the less oily and the thicker your hair is, the less often you need to wash it.

When you do wash, you’ll want a product formula that suits your hair’s natural level of moisture. Jack59 has products formulated specifically for various hair types. Not only do our shampoos and conditioners match your hair pH perfectly, but they’re also free from moisture-stripping sulfates, which leave your tresses prone to breakage.

3. Remember to Deep Condition

If you live in a harsh climate as we do in Edmonton, Alberta, deep conditioning your hair on a regular basis helps prevent breakage due to the ups and downs of the weather. In the summer, we either dry out our hair in the direct sunlight or squash it under sun hats. In the winter, the -40C winds come whipping at our hair and drying out our strands, while our toques wreak havoc on the hair’s roots.

Deep conditioners sink further into the hair follicle to nourish and moisturize. We recommend using our Liquid Gold Hair Serum to nourish your hair without coating it in silicone, keeping your hair luscious all year round. You can also use our regular conditioner bars as a leave-in conditioner; simply apply a small amount to the ends of your hair while it’s still damp. Also, stay tuned, because we will be releasing our concentrated hair masks soon!

4. Repair and Restore Treated Hair

The more you colour and treat your hair, the more prone to breakage your locks become. But that doesn’t mean you should stop colouring, perming, or blowing-out your hair. It just means your locks need special care to stay hydrated and healthy. Blonde colouring can be especially drying for hair, which is why we created our Blonde Bombshell shampoo and conditioner bars. They offer a moisture-rich toning effect that will keep your best blonde looking as fresh and radiant as when you left the salon without all the breakage. Finally – a sustainable purple shampoo and conditioner!

5. Be Gentle with Your Locks

Your hair goes through a lot on a daily basis. It gets twirled in fingers, pulled into a messy bun, and whipped around in the wind, snow, and rain. Being gentle with it at home can help reduce damage to your follicles. After washing, it may be tempting to rub your hair down quickly with a towel so you can get on with your day, but you’re actually contributing more to hair breakage by applying friction to the strands. Instead, slow down and take an extra minute or two to gently dab and squeeze the excess water out of your hair, rather than rub. You can also grab one of our soon-to-be-released organic bamboo hair wraps to reduce drying time!

Once your hair is semi-dry, don’t reach for your brush; instead, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair first. This is especially important if you have long hair, since water causes the strands to wrap around each other and tangle while you shower.
