From Homemade Haircare to BCorp Certified Beauty Brand: Jack59's Journey to Environmental Sustainability Leadership
It's an incredible honour for us to achieve this certification, especially considering how small we started.
Jack59 was born out of a desire to create something truly unique and special - a line of hair care products that offer salon quality but are good for the planet too. From the very beginning, we knew that we wanted to do things differently. We didn't want to be just another big corporation churning out poorly made, mass-produced products. Instead, we wanted to create something that was truly handmade, one by one, by real women who are passionate about what they do. That's why we're so proud to still be 100% handmade to this day. Every single bar of shampoo and conditioner that we produce is crafted with care and attention to detail. We use only the finest natural ingredients, sourced from sustainable and ethical suppliers, to ensure that our products are not only good for you, but good for the planet too.
So, what is this mission we speak of?
Individual consumer choices alone cannot be held responsible to solve the problems of environmental degradation and social inequality. We know that systemic change is necessary to achieve a higher level of sustainability. At Jack59, we firmly believe that the responsibility for environmental stewardship should be on businesses and corporations, minimizing the efforts each consumer must undertake to do their part for the planet. Through our extensive partnerships with outstanding retailers, we strive to make our products more widely available to consumers. We are committed to providing affordable and eco-conscious alternatives that prioritize quality and performance without the added labor of washing, composting, or recycling wasteful packaging or worrying about what harmful side effect the ingredients in your products might have on the environment.
While some sectors are subject to policies and regulations promoting environmental responsibility, such as energy and transportation industries, the beauty industry in many countries, including Canada, lacks mandatory sustainability standards. This means that businesses in this industry must volunteer to implement green practices, rather than relying on government to enforce regulations. At Jack59, we recognize our responsibility to promote environmental sustainability and strive to prioritize it in all aspects of our operations – like any good volunteer would!
We are excited about what the future holds for us as a BCorp company.
What’s this BCorp all about?
BCorp is a certification granted to businesses that meet certain social and environmental performance standards. It is administered by B Lab, a non-profit organization that assesses a company's impact on its workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Companies that achieve BCorp certification are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders, not just shareholders. To maintain BCorp status, a comprehensive Impact Assessment must be completed and reassessed every 3 years.
The process of becoming BCorp certified is rigorous and thorough. We had to complete an assessment of our company's impact on our workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. We also had to submit documentation that proved our commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices. Finally, we had to sign a BCorp declaration of interdependence, which commits us to using our business as a force for good and provides our consumers with an added level of transparency and trust in our products.
BCorp certification is a natural fit for Jack59. We've always been committed to creating sustainable, quality hair care products that are safe for both people and the planet, have worked tirelessly to reduce our carbon footprint and have shown up for our communities. Our BCorp certification reflects our ongoing commitment to these values, and it's one more way for us to hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards of ethical business practices.
Thank you for all of your support in our journey so far, we would not be here without you.
